Keeping Organized

We all are weighed down by medical expenses, bills, prescriptions and other important documents that we need to keep track of. Our pets are too! With Graham, I also want to keep track of what happens when we go out, skills we may need to brush up on and his overall health. For the past year I’ve been a big fan of using ARC notebooks for all my note taking, be it for work or for personal. The notebooks are extremely customizable and easy to set up. You can order them online or buy them at Staples for a low cost. You can buy accessories from calendar pages to to-do lists, project planning, rulers, highlighter tabs and so much more. For the more adventurous, you can purchase a special hole punch that punches paper to fit the “disc” system that the ARCs use. Because I’m a graphic designer, I…

Grooming with Balance Trouble

Graham is a golden retriever. Golden retrievers tend to have gorgeous fur that needs a good brushing and lots of attention to keep the home free of any fuzzy balls. The sight isn’t pretty… even on a rug that almost matches said golden’s fur. Because I walk with crutches, and because my balance isn’t quite where I’d like it to be, grooming Graham is difficult. He’s not a large golden, sitting at 58 lbs and coming to my waist (remember… I’m 4’8) but I need to be able to reach under his ears, his belly, the feathers on his legs and so on and so forth. Getting him dressed is equally as challenging. His gentle leader is simple for the most part but putting his vest on, or jackets and booties in the winter, is so much more complicated. The clasps are at the bottom, under his belly. His front…

A Night Out

Everyone likes to get out of the house and explore the town or find a nice place to eat. It’s fun, different and most definitely breaks up our mundane routines. For Graham, it’s time to work. Getting Prepared Restaurants are unpredictable, for the most part. They can be noisy, quiet, clean, grimy… you get the idea. Okay, so for the most part, you can guess if a place is going to be busy or not. A dinner on Tuesday night is going to bring in a completely different atmosphere than dinner on a Friday or Saturday night. Let’s be real. Who really wants to go out to dinner in the middle of the week when they have to get up early for work the next morning? Graham and I certainly don’t! When I go out with Graham, I have to be ready for all of these factors. It could be…

Staying Active in the Winter Months

Taking dogs out in bad weather is never fun. It’s cold, or wet, slippery and uncomfortable. It needs to be done. Our loyal four-legged companions need to potty and need to exercise. Winter is difficult for Graham and I. Taking him out in the cold isn’t too much of an issue… I bundle up and he gets dressed in his Land’s End jacket and booties. Sure we slip and slide a bit but I know he’s always there to help me if I start to go down. With a simple phrase that asks him to potty on command and that knowledge that I’m safe with him, pottying isn’t a problem. Exercise, however, still is. So what do I do when there’s no way I can let him run in the snow? Simple. I work him in my apartment. We have training sessions or play hide-and-seek. Is he rusty on a…
